Structural Criticism: Possibilities and Fallacies

Abstract

Structuralism looks at literature as a system of signs where meaning is made by putting the signs together in a certain way.. As far as linguistics is concerned, the importance of Saussure's theory of structuralism cannot be denied. But if it is discussed in the context of literary criticism and specifically Pashto literary criticism, the prospects are not so bright. The purpose of this paper is to define structuralist criticism and highlight the possibilities specifically the fallacies associated with it. The focus of this paper is to prove that structural criticism in the predicament of Pashto criticism, instead of being useful, can lead to many problems for many Pashtoon critics.
